I took Dot to get an HIB shot. We showed off her reading to the lab nurse (we stop and say hi to her a few times a month) and their office, as well as someone in the waiting room. They were all very impressed, especially when I showed her words upside down and she would turn them over! I tried writing the word “YAWN” and she looked at it really funny; I realized that I had written it in upper case. So I printed it again, but accidentally made the w like an upside-down m. She again looked at it strangely, but finally showed everyone her “yawn” and got lots of applause!
She screamed before she got her shot. I guess she knows what is coming, now. But she was great on the way home, playing with her bead necklaces she gets from the nurses there. No problems with the afternoon nap; the routine and time is working perfectly.
I started teaching Dot addition. She LOVED it. She enjoys her math cards so much now, and she got upset when we were done! She likes her piano lessons, too, but her attention isn’t very long there. She still watches her word cards with rapt attention, and will sit down and watch her videos most of the time, now. I’m going to set aside all of the body part word cards and make it a game to see how fast she can point to it.
Dot patted her arm, just like I’ve shown her, when we read the word arm today. I’m so proud of her! She went through a period that she would show me that she could read a new word every day, basically as she gained the ability to express what she was seeing. I’m thinking she can read even more words than that. I will see if she can recognize the word arm tomorrow, but it is likely she can, since “arms up” was one of the first she was able to read on her own.
This afternoon, she climbed up the butcherblock, scored a plum out of the fruit bowl, and started chowing down on it! They are perfectly ripe and very juicy. She walked around slurping on it and ate the entire thing! I got the pit away from her, but I think she may have eaten the label. (I didn’t notice she had the plum until she had taken quite a few bites from it.)
Dot continues to learn things at an astonishing rate. She still has trouble pointing to anything on her face, but she successfully pointed to her ear today. For some reason, though, she kept pointing to the word “lizard” and grabbing her head! Perhaps the word shape is too similar for her to distinguish, yet. She is starting to closely study words on a page, now, and I’ve caught her silently “reading” her books a number of times today.
Lately, Dot has been insisting that I read through all of her “Your Baby Can Read” books, at least twice a day. Today when we read “Clap”, “Arms Up”, and “Wave”, she did all three without hesitation! They are all in the Starter book.
